New Australian research of 3,429 people, including teenagers as young as 13, found that teenage boys were the group most likely to express misogynistic attitudes, mistrust of women and rigid beliefs about gender roles.
Concerningly, the University of Melbourne study found that 1 in 4 teenage boys agreed that feminism should be resisted with violence. Researchers also found across six forms of extremism, the strongest predictor of support for extremist violence wasn't political ideology, religion, ethnicity or how much time someone spent online, but hostility towards women.
From the finding, the report makes a number of recommendations, including:
- Earlier respectful relationships education
- Recognising misogyny within counter-extremism approaches
- Stronger regulation of online platforms and algorithms.
