Costumes Are Not Consent: Rights & Responsibilities for Kids This Halloween
Whatever your take on Halloween, dressing up as a superhero, a monster, or a princess and running around with friends is sheer magic for kids (and let’s be honest, plenty of adults). But adult creative spaces like comic cons and Renaissance fairs have long had to address a serious issue: the idea that wearing a costume is an open invitation to touch, stare, or cross boundaries. That’s where the phrase "Cosplay is Not Consent" came from. Halloween is the ultimate costume event, making it the perfect time to help our kids understand both their rights to their own body and...

Why I was frightened to raise a son
Before becoming a father, I wanted a daughter because I was terrified of raising a son. Although far from perfect, society has begun to accept and appreciate women who do not fit traditional gender roles, and there is a broad understanding that we should teach our daughters to be strong, assertive, bold, and take up space. Raising a daughter in a culture that was finally offering girls the support they need to thrive meant I would be joining an established momentum rather than swimming against the current. Unfortunately, I do not see the same cultural momentum for raising respectful and...

Why I Wrote Respect Me! Respect My Boundaries!
As a young woman growing up, I was fortunate enough to have the confidence to say what I thought, and in my own way, set boundaries around what behaviours towards me and my friends I would tolerate and what I would not. But as the years have passed, I realise not everyone has that confidence. In this political climate, where the rhetoric is often dismissive, disrespectful and derogatory towards many groups I thought what tools and skills do I have to change the conversation around disrespectful behaviours and standing up to those who display them. Writing kids’ books about topics...

Research finds high levels of misogyny in teenage boys.
New Australian research of 3,429 people, including teenagers as young as 13, found that teenage boys were the group most likely to express misogynistic attitudes, mistrust of women and rigid beliefs about gender roles. Concerningly, the University of Melbourne study found that 1 in 4 teenage boys agreed that feminism should be resisted with violence. Researchers also found across six forms of extremism, the strongest predictor of support for extremist violence wasn't political ideology, religion, ethnicity or how much time someone spent online, but hostility towards women. From the finding, the report makes a number of recommendations, including: Earlier respectful...

Kansas child advocacy group donates hundreds of body education books to elementary schools
Protecting Kansas Children from Sexual Predators, a volunteer-led group in Topeka, ships hundreds of body-safety books to elementary schools across the state. The group of child sex abuse survivors said they are working to educate the public about increased abuse in communities and advocate for legislative reform that will prevent future child abuse. The book "My Body! What I Say Goes!" by Jayneen Sanders was chosen for donation to elementary schools, according to co-director Tess Ramirez, who said the group will focus first on rural communities that lack child advocacy centers. Investigation Reveals Systemic Failures Allowing Paedophiles to Infiltrate Childcare
A major Four Corners investigation has exposed a crisis in Australia's $22 billion childcare industry, revealing that paedophiles are exploiting "lax regulation, piecemeal oversight, and glaring staffing inadequacies" to gain access to children. The investigation identified nearly 150 childcare workers convicted, charged, or accused of sexual abuse or inappropriate conduct, with the rate of offending increasing in recent years. Experts, including a forensic psychologist, warn that predators are drawn to the childcare sector because it is a "prey-rich environment" with "instant trust" and lack of supervision, noting the real number of offenders who have worked in the industry is likely...
